WHAT IS AQUAPONICS?
AQUAPONICS is a closed loop ecosytem which is made possible by combining AQUACULTURE AND HYDROPONICS. The concept of combining quatic farming of fish and the growing of gardens simultaneous within a single system, that has taken the hobby of home gardening to another level. Both fish and the plant kingdom share a very special relationship when they're combined for the purpose of growing food aquaponically- (plants and fish for consumption). The fish provide the nutrients through waste being converted by bacteria into plant available nutrients.
Fish are generally raised in tanks/pools which are attached to a garden via (plumbing) water delivery system of which there a variety of methods. Aquaponics is ideal because through this unique and delicate balance of nature the veggie plants receive the required nutrients, which are continuously supplied by the fish in the tanks due to the accumulation of fish waste - which can create toxic levels of ammonia. Many processes take place during the initial cycling of the fish tank and growbeds including bacterial and microbial activity which converts the ammonia into nitrites and then into nitrates- through nitrification. These benificial bacteria-nitrobacter and nitrosomonas are naturally occuring and soon colonize the biofilter (growbed media-rocks etc.) and convert the ammonia at the atomic level turning it into usable nitrogen for the plants. While the plants are utilizing these nutrients, they actually filter and help purify the water before it is returned back to the fish. All you have to do is feed the fish and then the fish feed the plants and the roots clean the water for the fish. A perfect example of the mechanics of permaculture- different species helping one another. All the while, the plants flourish with the most lush growth imaginable in the fastest time through this symbiotic relationship with the fish and bacteria within the ecosystem. They are assured fresh, clean water at all times!
Initially, it is the oxygenated water and fish solids being pumped into the growbeds that stimulates microbial activity and plant root growth. Aquaponic systems are true organic self-regulating ecosystems. These colonies of different types of beneficial bacteria & microbes quickly reach a balance point, and make the nutrients accessible to the plants, which give the plants exactly what they need at the precise times the plants need it. This is triggered by the roots exudation or releasing of cells and mucilage. How this is acheived is partially known at this time and much has yet to be studied. Once the biofilter is in complete balance after a couple of months, The aquaponic ecosystem then begins to mature and becomes super-stable.
